Conjugated polymers have been proposed as promising materials for scaffolds in tissue engineering applications. However, the restricted processability and biodegradability of conjugated polymers limit their use for biomedical applications. Here we synthesized a block-co-polymer of aniline tetramer and PCL (AT–PCL), and processed it into fibrous non-woven scaffolds by electrospinning. We showed that fibronectin (Fn) adhesion was dependent on the AT–PCL oxidative state, with a reduced Fn unfolding length on doped membranes. Furthermore, we demonstrated the cytocompatibility and potential of these membranes to support the growth and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells over 21 days.

Since their introduction more than forty years ago, antenatal glucocorticoids have become a cornerstone in the management of preterm birth and have been responsible for substantial reductions in neonatal mortality and morbidity. Clinical trials conducted over the past decade have shown that these benefits may be increased further through administration of repeat doses of antenatal glucocorticoids in women at ongoing risk of preterm and in those undergoing elective cesarean at term. At the same time, a growing body of experimental animal evidence and observational data in humans has linked fetal overexposure to maternal glucocorticoids with increased risk of cardiovascular, metabolic and other disorders in later life. Despite these concerns, and somewhat surprisingly, there has been little evidence to date from randomized trials of longer-term harm from clinical doses of synthetic glucocorticoids. However, with wider clinical application of antenatal glucocorticoid therapy there has been greater need to consider the potential for later adverse effects. This paper reviews current evidence for the short- and long-term health effects of antenatal glucocorticoids and discusses the apparent discrepancy between data from randomized clinical trials and other studies.

Poor maternal nutrition during pregnancy can result in increased disease risk in adult offspring. Many of these effects are proposed to be mediated via altered hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPAA) function, and are sex and age specific. Maternal undernutrition around the time of conception alters HPAA function in foetal and early postnatal life, but there are limited conflicting data about later effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of moderate periconceptional undernutrition on HPAA function of offspring of both sexes longitudinally, from juvenile to adult life. Ewes were undernourished from 61 days before until 30 days after conception or fed ad libitum. HPAA function in offspring was assessed by arginine vasopressin plus corticotropin-releasing hormone challenge at 4, 10 and 18 months. Plasma cortisol response was lower in males than in females, and was not different between singles and twins. Periconceptional undernutrition suppressed offspring plasma cortisol but not adrenocorticotropic hormone responses. In males, this suppression was apparent by 4 months, and was more profound by 10 months, with no further change by 18 months. In females, suppression was first observed at 10 months and became more profound by 18 months. Maternal undernutrition limited to the periconceptional period has a prolonged, sex-dependent effect on adrenal function in the offspring.

Summary
Introduction
This chapter deals with X-ray emission from isolated neutron stars for which the energy for the observed X-rays is thought to originate from the rotation of the neutron star, or from an internal heat reservoir following formation. Rotation power can manifest itself as pulsed emission, or as nebular radiation produced by a relativistic wind of particles emitted by the neutron star. Residual heat of formation is observed as soft X-ray emission from young neutron stars. Such thermal radiation, however, can also be produced as a result of reheating from internal or external sources. Rotation-powered pulsed and nebular X-ray emission, as well as thermal emission, can often be observed in a single object simultaneously; this is both fascinating and annoying, as one invariably contaminates the study of the other. There are also a handful of neutron stars for which the origin of the observed X-ray emission is unclear but may be related to the above processes; we will discuss those as well.
Rotation-powered neutron stars are generally referred to as “radio pulsars” since it is at radio wavelengths that the vast majority of the catalogued population (currently numbering ∼1400) is observed. However, the radio emission is energetically unimportant, and we now know of several rotation-powered neutron stars that are not detected as radio sources in spite of deep searches (e.g. Crawford et al. 1998; McLaughlin et al. 2001). We therefore use the more physically motivated term “rotation-powered.”

Hollow polyimide shells, to be used in inertial confinement fusion experiments, were fabricated by codepositing monomer precursors onto spherical mandrels. Polyimide shells with 700 to 950 μm diameters and 4 to 13 μm wall thicknesses were produced. The shell wall shrunk 20–30% due to imidization. Burst and buckle pressure tests on these shells yielded estimated mechanical strength properties: ∼ 15 GPa elastic modulus and ∼ 300 MPa tensile strength. The permeability of D2 through polyamic acid at 298 K was 7.4 × 10−17 mol · m/m2 · Pa · s and increased to 6.4 × 10−16 mol · m/m2 · Pa · s upon curing the shell to 150 °C. The permeability of D2 at 298 K through vapor-deposited polyimide flat films was 240 times greater than through polyamic acid.
